Things Your House Needs to Prepare for a Storm
Your house is one of the largest investments you will make in your lifetime. You will pour in not only money but also your time and other resources to make living in your house comfortable for you and your family. However, natural calamities like storms come and go and often they leave much devastation in their wake. Especially for real estate properties. So it is a no-brainer that protecting your property is a priority for you as a homeowner. No house can ever be fully stormproof, but knowing what a storm can do to your property can make you plan and prepare for any eventualities if your house would come face to face with one of nature’s furies.
There is one more important thing though, never forget that your own safety will always be more important than any property you might have. If and when an evacuation might be ordered at your area, please do so without hesitation. Whether you are at home or at your workplace, keeping yourself safe is the first and foremost priority to have in times of calamity. When you have prepared your house before any storm comes, you can still be confident in knowing that you have done the best you could to keep your house as safe as you could from any storm.
Home maintenance
General home maintenance is the key to making sure that your house is in proper condition always. You should always regularly check your roof to make sure it is still in good condition. Clean up the gutters, the downpipes, and the drains. Make sure that it is clear from leaves and other debris that may block the waterflow. Remove and cut down tree branches that are close to the house in order to avoid it falling on your property and breaking anything. Make sure to check for any corrosion. Fix any loose fittings and secure any loose items you might have around your property. Find and replace any rotting or termite affected timber.
Home safety preparations
Make sure that your home, contents, and car insurance are up to date and current. Know how you can turn off your power, water, and gas lines safely. Always have a ready supply of water and food, with a camping stove with fuel around, in case you get stranded. Make sure you have identified and prepared the safest room in your house which you can use as a shelter as you wait out the storm.
If you live in a flood-prone area, make sure that you have store poisons and chemicals above possible flood level. This would also apply to any appliances and items that you might need to empty and raise well ahead of any flooding. Also, do make sure that power points are all well above flood levels.
If you live in a cyclone prone area, it is best to have a professional builder assess your house for its structural integrity. The roof is most vulnerable to strong winds. You can have it strapped down to avoid it flying away when the strong winds hit. You should also fit shutters or screens on your windows for protection. Do make sure that your garage doors are boarded up to avoid it from getting ripped off when strong winds come. Also, make sure that carport posts are secured down on the ground. Not only that, check your yard and see if you have any furniture, decorations, and appliances that are not secured to the ground. Remove and store in a safe place, or secure it to the ground in order to avoid it flying away and hitting anything.
It always pays to be prepared and informed when calamities strike.
