20 Things to Let Go for a Happier Home This Year
New Year is always a good inspiration to re-evaluate life and start new beginnings. As we move forward, we should decide on which part of our lives we would keep and which ones we should leave behind. This also applies to the stuff that we keep for the reason that we might need them someday however, this would only result to a huge pile of mess. So in order to make room for new things in life, we must let go of the old ones that are of no use or those that only burden us.
Here is an inventory of the unnecessary stuff that you need to let go of for a happier home this year:
-
Old bills
If you have been keeping your bills since you moved in to your house, then it must be a tall stack of paper by now. You wouldn’t need all of it when a situation requires you to provide a proof of billing. Most of the time, they just ask for 2-3 previous bills so better start recycling them or throw them away.
-
Storage bums
The stuff you haven’t used for the last 2 months or more should give you enough reason not to keep them. They may be sentimental but they also take up space that you may utilize for other things.
-
Neglected wardrobe
Give away the clothes that don’t fit you anymore. It’s either you sell them to thrift shops (also known as ukay-ukay) if you need extra money, or just give them to people who would gladly accept it. Just make sure they are still presentable. If not, add them to your pile of rags and throw the old ones out.
-
Leftovers and empty containers
Your leftovers deserve to be eaten as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will just dry out in the cold and you will be forced to throw them away. This year, try to avoid having to throw out leftover food by cooking what you can finish and finishing what you cook. You can also clear out the surface of your refrigerator and leave only the important ones on while you’re at it.
-
Old Christmas decors
Think about the space it occupies in your house. You won’t need them next Christmas because they are so last year, literally.
-
Redundant Kitchenware
Who needs more than one piece of the same function? Give them to friends who just moved out of their parents’ house. It will give them something to start with.
-
Empty photo albums
Reorganize your old photos and you might find that some of your albums contain only a few photos or no photos at all. You know what to do.
-
Broken items you’ve been meaning to fix
How long has it been broken? Were you able to actually fix it or were you just meaning to but couldn’t find the time to do so? If yes, throw it away or sell it to the nearest junk shop.
-
Busted light bulbs and other related spare parts
If you are a hoarder of busted lights or spare parts from broken appliances, then it’s high time to get them out of your garage and sell them to a junk shop together with your broken appliances (see number 8).
-
VCD/VHS Player
It consumes more space than you imagine. Instead of keeping them under your TV rack, you could use that space for something else that has been lying around for too long.
-
Old TV Set
If you already bought an up-to-date television, what do you need the old cathode ray tube for? There are surplus shops nearby that might be interested in your old set.
-
Meaningless jewelry
Give them away as they are just like your old clothes and the other stuff that you just keep in storage.
Mindset and bad habits, on the other hand, can also be included in the list of the things that we must let go for a better life and home as it affects our attitude and decision-making.
Here are some needless ways you need to let go of this year as well:
-
Pessimism
Negative thinking creates negative vibes that would most probably live with you inside your house. Have you heard about the Law of Attraction? Thinking about positive thoughts attracts positive things.
-
Over-thinking
This old habit does not help you solve anything. Rather, it adds more stress than you could handle and will leave you depressed or de-motivated.
-
Regrets
Regrets only make you feel down and depressed. The past is behind you now and there is nothing you can do about it. What you can change is the future so make it count.
-
Mindlessness
Over-thinking is bad, yes, but it doesn’t mean to be mindless instead. Mix the right amount of caring and shrugging things off when needed and you’ll be okay.
-
Bad temper
This is a hard one to let go especially when the world and people around you frustrate you more often than not. Take baby steps and slowly make your way to a more peaceful life.
-
New Year’s resolution
You don’t need a New Year’s resolution to better your life. What you need is a long term resolution. Start small and take it from there.
-
Leaving stuff anywhere
Less disorder means less cleaning. Let go of that old habit and put things back where they belong after you use them.
-
Vices
Reflect on the vices that you find so hard to let go and find a substitute to divert your attention especially when it’s taking its toll on your health.
