Manila FAME 2019: A Spotlight on Color, Fashion, and Women Designers

Manila FAME is one of the longest-running lifestyle and design trade shows in the Philippines. The bi-annual event held its 69th edition last April 25-27, 2019 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City, Philippines, opening their doors once again to thousands of buyers and enthusiasts. Attendees of the event witnessed one of the biggest gatherings of contemporary designers showcasing Filipino craftsmanship and artistry. Themed “Heritage Reimagined,” the event highlighted design styles and elements of the past and reintroduced them through modern interpretations.

Manila FAME has established itself over the years as one of the largest venues to discover Filipino design talents. Guests from around the country and abroad drop by the event each year with the intention of buying export-quality, local products to design their houses or condominiums with. In the process, they have the chance to meet the artisans who make these items!

The first leg of the trade fair this year spotlighted the use of vibrant colors, showcased uniquely crafted fashion pieces, and celebrated the work of women designers as seen in these three exhibits.

Design Commune

Curated by newly appointed Manila FAME creative director, Vince Uy, Design Commune was a collaboration of several designers and was one of the central exhibits during the event. Those who had a hand in this captivating exhibit where Stanley Ruiz for home and lighting, Nix Alanon for furniture and lighting, Andre Chang for fashion, and PJ Aranador and Maco Custodio for home and fashion. An eye-catcher due to its vibrant colors, the exhibit was a masterpiece on the use of traditional materials and styles married with a youthfulness through the use of prints and geometric shapes.

Artisans Village

The Artisans Village exhibit presents four provinces’ products, drawing attention to the process of production and the raw materials used. In this edition of Manila FAME, manufacturers from Antique, Marawi, Zamboanga, and Albay were invited to showcase their beautiful fabrics, bags, and fashion emblems. The exhibit, which allowed visitors to experience a glimpse of the culture of each province, hosted live demonstrations to show how the materials are fashioned into the end product.

Great Women Project

The Gender Responsive Economic Actions for the Transformation of Women (GREAT) Women Project exhibited the innovative creations by female artisans and entrepreneurs. Featuring an elaborate selection of products, it celebrated the women behind the beautiful products and gave them a platform to expand their markets.

Manila FAME also served as a platform for local online stores and brands to set up shop. Among those present during the event were Nomadic Tendencies, AVA Online Group Inc., and Factory.

But the true cornerstones of Manila FAME – breathtaking interiors, innovative designs, and the craftsmanship of the Filipino people – were in full display as more than 300 exhibitors participated in the three-day event.

Manila FAME is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotion arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The second run of the event is scheduled on October 2019.
