How to Prepare for a Kitchen Remodeling
Having your kitchen remodeled is extremely exciting, and you probably can’t wait to see the end result. At the same time, however, you should take into account that there is a lot of preparation to do before you get to that stage. Start out by following these tips, instead of letting your excitement leave you unprepared.
Box everything up
The first thing that you will want is to get all of your possessions out of the way. Not only will it be annoying and tedious to move things first one way and then the other, but they could also get damaged – so it’s best to get everything out of the way completely. Invest in lots of packing tape, cardboard boxes, and bubble wrap, and get your plates, pots, and pans boxed up. You can then store them in another room for a while, or hire a cheap storage space for the duration of your remodeling. Anything that can move, should – including your kettle, microwave, and other cooking equipment.
Find a new cooking space
While your kitchen is out of commission, where are you going to cook? Are you going to have access to the area after the workmen have gone home for the night?
Microwave meals and anything that requires a kettle can easily be done just by plugging these items into sockets in a different room for a while. You might find this inconvenient, but it beats having to spend lots of money on unhealthy food from fast food restaurants every night! You can also get a mini fridge for storing any items that need to be chilled.
Call a removal company
This time we’re not talking about putting things into storage, but instead getting rid of the things you don’t want anymore. Maybe your remodel includes a new fridge unit, and the old one is too battered to sell. Maybe you have a lot of old pans that you are replacing, or you’ve decided to tear all the cupboard doors off and throw them out. Whatever the case, it’s also likely that you will need removals again at the end of your remodel, to take care of any waste that has been generated. You can just call a company who will come and get rid of all of the rubbish for you to make things much simpler.
Consider moving out
If your kitchen remodel is going to be very noisy, take a long time, and cause a lot of mess, then you might need to move out of your home. Consider the fact that there can often be lots of unexpected problems with remodels that could make it take longer – or require things like toxic chemicals. For example, a remodel can easily uncover an infestation which requires exterminators to come into the house.
It might be better for you and your family to move out of the home for a while until the remodel is totally finished. This will also allow the workmen more freedom to work longer hours and on weekends without disturbing you, so the job might get done quicker. You could stay in a hotel, rent a home, or live with family temporarily.
When you have the preparations in place, it is much easier to bear things like a job running over time, causing more noise or mess than you anticipated, or being more disruptive than you thought it would be. You can be more flexible when you’ve already done the groundwork.
