Featured Expert at Work: Chef Ivory Yat

The thriving Greenfield District, which was once generally referred to as EDSA Central, holds so much potential. The site houses both new and familiar restaurants and serves as a venue for some of the most awaited events in the metro. It has become one of the most preferred hangout places since its redevelopment. Residential towers, offices, shopping buildings, and a range of food places make up the neighborhood; thus, we can say that they contribute to the continuous success of the district.

Investing in a home or a commercial property near the site is actually a smart move. As the worth of the district increases, it is likely that the value of the surrounding properties will also increase.

We sat down with Ms. Ivory Santos Yat, the Head Chef and Co-owner of Splice Resto Bar, and asked her about doing business and just anything under the sun.

According to Ivory, the district is an ideal place for people who want to set a trend. It reveals how good you are when it comes to making things happen. Since the center is currently progressing, starting a business in the area is beneficial. She also mentioned that the location is filled with professionals which are ideal target markets for businesses.

How did your career start?

I joined the local Master Chef and won 3rd place. I got a scholarship to pursue culinary arts and the rest is history.

Can you share with us your career background?

After the contest, I started a catering company with my winnings. I launched my first food stall in Mercato. During the same year, I got a job as a culinary instructor in De La Salle – College of St. Benilde. In that short period of time, I have managed to get multiple contracts with big companies for their catering needs.

What do you love most about your career? Why?

It is definitely earning while doing what I love. It is the ultimate happily ever after in my career’s fairy tale – it is almost too good to be true. Most of the time, it involves traveling to cool places and meeting new people that share the same goals as you.

Do you have other restaurants aside from Splice?

I have a catering company plus a few booths in Mercato. I also have an upcoming restaurant, The Beef Barn, which will open late in October in Eastwood Citywalk.

Why did you choose to put up a restaurant despite you already having your own catering services?

It is the fun and challenge that I crave for. Time will come that when you do the same thing repeatedly you hit a plateau and just want to feel challenged again. Also, dealing with different clients every day awakens my excitement and you never know what is going to happen during transactions.

Why did you choose Greenfield?

The district has a really good potential. It already has existing commercial spaces, residential condominiums and community, and a lot of offices nearby.

Why do you think the location is set apart from other commercial business districts?

It is the diversity of the people. They go here to have lunch or unwind after a hard day at work. It is not a mall wherein clients line up to avail services. The site is a hidden gem in Ortigas. The al fresco ambiance or the “green field” is something new to the eyes.

What do you love most about the neighborhood?

I really love the community here. Our business neighbors and clients are now our friends. Moreover, the condominium residents treat our restaurant as if it is their extended kitchen.

If you do not have a restaurant, what kind of business would you venture into? Why?

It is missing a spa or a salon. One time, I was roaming around for a break and looking for a massage parlor or a place where I can have a mani-pedi. It does not have one! The idea that I could start one here and target the residents and office workers hit me.

Do you think Ortigas is an ideal place for business and residence? Why?

Yes. I love the location since it is accessible. Also, commercial establishments are just 5-to-10-minute-walk away. It implies convenience since it is a prime location.

Why do you think people should invest in a property in this district?

It is the extension of Ortigas. It will keep on growing and prospering. For sure, it will double the value of your investment.

What is your greatest advice for aspiring chefs?

Experience is your best friend. Practice and hone your craft. Love what do you. It is not always about passion. You can always have it but then lack action. What you need is dedication. It is the amount of time and effort you put into your work. Remember, we reap what we sow.

If you are wondering when the perfect time to invest in a property in the district is, it is now. Finalize your concepts if you are planning to put up a business or pack your clothes and be ready to face a new chapter of your life. Yes, it is your weekend hangout spot and the place you go to on pig-out day, but it does not end there; it offers a platform where you can witness your business, career, and personal growth prosper.
